#5: You get a unique dog
Often times in a shelter, the dogs are mixed breeds. This allows you to obtain a dog that looks nothing like any other dog you have ever seen before. You can choose from any of the dogs in the shelter, which are a wide range of sizes and temperaments. But, if you do want a purebred or a specific type of dog, you can still get this through adoption. There are rescues for specific breeds of dogs if you know exactly what type of dog you want.

REASONS TO ADOPT
#4: It's cheaper
When you buy a dog from a pet store, it can cost thousands of dollars. Adopting, on the other hand, costs little to nothing. When you purchase a dog, the money you use to buy them goes to the pet store as well as the puppy mills. This allows the puppy mills to prosper and expand and grow their business. But, when you adopt, any money that you do pay for that dog goes to the shelter. The shelter uses this money to buy food or supplies to house and help the remaining dogs they have. Adopting a dog is better for the owner as well as the pet.

#3: You get a healthier pet
When you buy from a pet store, the dogs are purebred. Purebred dogs are susceptible to many more genetic problems and diseases than mixed breed dogs are. Additionally, in order to be in a shelter, dogs have to get many shots and procedures done to them. So, when you adopt a dog from the shelter they are already up-to-date on all of their vaccinations in addition to being spade or neutered.

#2: You are not supporting puppy mills
Animals for sale in pet stores are the result of what are known as "puppy mills". Puppy mills are factory style breeding facilities for dogs. The breeders do not care about the welfare of the animals, but only that they are able to continually produce puppies. These dogs are often severely traumatized from this experience. So, when you purchase a dog from the puppy store, you are supporting puppy mills. Although you may not actually be in favor of them, you are providing them with business every time you purchase an animal from a pet store instead of adopting one. This allows them to grow and prosper their businesses, abusing more dogs along the way.

#1: YOU'RE SAVING A LIFE!!!!
Pets in the shelter are often in jeopardy of being euthanized. Shelters have limited space and money to buy resources for the pets, so they often have to make the difficult decision to euthanize the dogs or cats who are not being adopted. By adopting a pet, you are saving its life and giving it a good, loving home. Also, when you adopt you are opening up a spot in the shelter for another dog to stay and live longer. In reality, when you adopt you are saving the lives of two animals and not even just one.

Inspiration
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jocw-oD2pgo
This video is about a college softball player who has hit her first home run ever. As she was jogging around the bases, she missed first base, so she had to turn back in order to touch it. As she was turing around, she unfortunately stepped the wrong way and tore her ACL. She was laying on the ground, unable to get up or walk. The umpire stated that if any of her teammates or coaches touched her, she would be declared out. Additionally, if the coach decided to put in another player, the home run would have been limited to a single. Not wanted to see this girl, who just hit her first home run ever, not get the credit for it, two members of the opposing team asked the umpire if they would be allowed to pick her up and carry her around the bases. After a little bit of shock from everyone, the umpire stated that that would be fine. The players on the other team picked her up and carried her around, touching every base, so that she could get her home run.
This video truly inspires me everyday. As a college softball player myself, I know how competitive games are. In the spirit of competition, you often forget that your opponents are people just like you, and not actually your mortal enemies. Seeing these girls, who ended up losing based off of this home run, pick the girl up and carry her is extremely inspirational. This has changed the way I think about opposing teams, and just people in general. These girls were so kind to a complete stranger, that it makes me think about every action I preform and makes me want to be nicer. This video shows such great sportsmanship, and has taught me a lot about it. Overall, this video inspires me to be both a better competitor as well as person in general.
